wimaxxed

wimaxxed

The last project I worked on in Motorola revolved around WiMAX. It's an emerging technology that allows high speed wireless data access. It's basically WiFi that can cover larger areas (but hopefully without the initial teething problems of vendor compatability and security issues that hobbled WiFi for so long). Motorola is one of the bigger companies pushing it and is actively developing WiMAX equipment. Intel are planning to add WiMAX to it's processors for laptops in the near future (in the same way that they currently have WiFi support built in).

Anyway above is a link to a blog to an Irish based start-up hoping to provide wireless internet access based on WiMAX and WiFi. I hope WiMAX is a success. It seems to be a great technical solution. My fear is that the markets it will try and compete in have incumbent operators that will simply drop prices to compete and large scale network operators (like Vodafone) have invested heavily in 3G and there's no clear migration path for them for WiMAX. Where it has real merit is definetly in rural markets beyond the reach of ADSL versions of broadband. All the best to WiMAX EU.
